»Beirut Birds« is a sonic memory capsule that weaves together live improvisation, interviews, field recordings, and the sounds of objects that evoke migration. In live performance, it is accompanied by juxtaposed images of city life in the Lebanese capital and avian migration across the Mediterranean, reflecting themes embedded in the music. The songs are enriched by Nour Sokhon’s improvisations on classical piano, electronics, synthesizers, violin, and a variety of percussion instruments.
Nour Sokhon is a Lebanese artist based in Berlin. Her practice engages in artistic research through interviews, field recordings, and site-specific interventions, which she transforms into sound compositions, performances, installations, and moving image works. She received the Emerging Artist Prize at Sursock Museum (2019) and the Sound Art 2020 scholarship from the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. Her debut album Beirut Birds was released in 2024 with support from the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC). Nour Sokhon’s work has been presented at festivals such as Punkt (NO), Gaudeamus (NL), and the Biennale d’Aix (FR), as well as at institutions including SAVVY Contemporary (DE), Henie Onstad Kunstsenter (NO) and the Beirut Art Center (LB).
