Heroines of Sound is excited to be part of the Volksbühne re-opening with two of our favourite local artists, Ale Hop and Jasmine Guffond. Expect a mind-blowing performance straddeling noise avant-garde, field recordings and experimental pop.

Smashing the guitar is often the sweeping finale of a rock concert. In noise music, where noise is elevated and transformed into sound, the smashing is part of the sound vocabulary. Ale Hop’s approach to electric guitar play is more sophisticated and technically refined than with rock bands, but just as bold and overwhelming. She concisely debunks music chlichés and sets out to create her own aesthetic. A unique repertoire of instrument techniques, synthesizer and voice distortion effects are the musician’s tools to craft complex pop arrangements of astonishing physical intensity.

With a background as composer for the theatre and dance performances, Jasmine Guffond is an expert in representing complex concepts through sonic interpretations. Focused on electronic composition across music and art contexts, her practice spans live performance, recording, sound installation and custom-made browser plug-ins. Her solo releases are fine-grained electronic compositions weaving oscillating bass tones, field recordings and drone music into vibrant harmonies and songs. Working with abstract sound as much as traditional musical forms, she translates data into deeply engaging compositions.

Heroines of Sound rounds-off the season with another highlight. ensemble mosaik takes center stage presenting a concert by contemporary composers that extends from electronics, performance, and audio/visual media to socio-critical topics. The focus is on world premieres of new works by Laurie Schwartz, Liping Ting and Ying Wang.

The experience of the pandemic, of a hermetically sealed society, is met head on by the artists with a view toward the open world, taking up topics of censorship/oppression as in Ying Wang’s DIS-A, contemplating isolation and communication in a ritualistic performance as in Liping Ting’s OOO-intime, or as in Laurie Schwartz’s Outtakes from the Dangerous Women Files, shedding light on historically marginalized protagonists of culture and politics, challenging existing norms.
