»if« is a very small word, yet it holds both fear and hope. It can signal darkness or light, prove to be false, for better or worse. It is a word at a crossroads, a word that may have a future, a word that augurs uncertainty and opportunity, perhaps even change, a space for different options, decisions.

»[if]« for 6 instruments was written end of 2023 for Ensemble Meitar. A study of chords and fog. An expression of friendship. The revised version, including electronics will be premiered at Festival Heroines of Sound 2025.

Sarah Nemtsov, born in Oldenburg, Germany, studied composition in Hannover and Berlin. Her music captivates through sensitively constructed setups, complex and energetic textures, layered musical structures, and interactions between acoustic instruments and electronics, often with references to other art forms and media. She has received numerous awards, including the Busoni Composition Prize from the Berlin Academy of the Arts. In 2020, she was nominated for the Opus Klassik Award in the category »Composer of the Year«. Sarah Nemtsov’s works are performed at internationally renowned festivals such as the Donaueschinger Musiktage and Wien Modern. In 2021, she became a member of both the Saxon Academy of Arts and the Berlin Academy of Arts. Since 2022, she has been Professor of Composition at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. She lives in Berlin.
