»ascending in front of the void« is a piece that seeks to explore the Negev Desert. At its core lies Norah Inbar’s text »The Voice Archive«, which reflects upon the desert as a space that holds imprints of voices from both the present and the past, a place where time inscribes itself in multiple ways, leaving traces that can be rediscovered as an archive of history. The piece was composed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. Despite initial plans, it was ultimately impossible for me to visit the Negev in person. This led to the challenge of engaging with a place I had never experienced firsthand. Field recordings and photographs served as very distant connections to the place and became my companions in the process of composing. My own personal experience of the place remained a missing piece of the puzzle.
