Nina Fukuoka is a Japanese-Polish composer and performer based in New York City. Her work examines the present as a fragile structure shaped by tension and instability. Drawing on aesthetic concepts from horror and video games, as well as feminist research perspectives, she develops alternative ways of engaging with contemporary reality, in which the uncanny serves as an analytical tool through which hidden structures and latent forms of violence are revealed. She studied composition and music theory at the Grazyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz University of Music in Łódź, Poland, and at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in Belgium, before completing a doctorate in composition at Columbia University. Her works have been premiered at international festivals and major venues across Europe, North America and Japan, including Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, the Warsaw Autumn and the musikprotokoll in Graz.
