»Airchoir No. 2: Dirges for (26) Coded Organ Voices« transforms sound, textiles and technology into a spatially expansive instrument. A specially developed ventilation and electronic system sets 26 metal and wooden organ pipes into vibration, while inflatable elements expand and contract like breathing organs. Like a choir, the individual voices merge into a larger sonic body, while overlapping tones shifting throughout the space depending on the listeners’ positions.
The first version of »Airchoir« was created in 2023 as a prototype using eight wooden pipes. This second version, larger in scale and technically more refined, significantly expands the sonic range. With its 20 inflatable bodies and 26 pipes, the installation resembles a breathing organism permeating the space.
In this work, Anouk Kellner explores dualities between past and present, the organic and the non-organic, and humanity and technology. While the organ evokes a religious tradition, its fully programmed and electronically controlled system detaches it from that context. Strict algorithmic compositions meet seemingly living, breathing forms that give the system a physical, almost human presence. The result is a tension between rational structure and sensory experience.
Anouk Kellner is a sound artist and composer based in Belgium. Her artistic practice often combines classical musical instruments with modern technology, bringing together composition, sound sculpture and performance. At the center of her work is the subjective experience of time. She has a particular interest in the church organ, which she reinterprets in recent projects through electronic controls and sculptural structures. This results in immersive sound worlds in which she explores a range of sonic textures and narrative layers. Alongside her sound art projects, she is also active as a DJ, including on Kiosk Radio in Brussels, where she is known for experimental and atmospheric sets.
